Delivery leadership built from inside the work.

I began deep in the technical work: design development, documentation, specification, contract administration, shop drawings and site superintendence. That foundation now informs how I manage design, consultants and delivery from the client side, making decisions with a clear understanding of what will be documented, procured and built.

Technical design + site delivery

I spent my early years deep in the documentation: drawing production and review, specification, shop drawings and architects' instructions. I administered contracts, resolved details on site and superintended construction, including a twelve‑month defects period at Barangaroo. It is why I can read a drawing set and know what will actually be built from it.

Multidisciplinary design management

I have led integrated consultant teams and design programmes across architecture, landscape, interiors, structure and services: selecting and briefing consultants, sequencing deliverables against approvals and procurement, chairing design reviews and resolving cross‑discipline interfaces. On Quay Quarter I built the BIM environment that made those interfaces visible before they reached site; on Sydney Metro I ran four teams at once against government review.

Client‑side project governance

From the client's chair I hold feasibility, built‑form capacity, budget, programme and risk, and the approvals that carry a project: NCC, Australian Standards, NSW planning and DBP Act obligations, procurement strategy and early contractor engagement. Across five Sydney CBD precincts I have governed design from feasibility to handover, and made the calls when buildability, programme and cost pulled against each other.

Across public and private work, I have held design against buildability, programme, cost and risk on both sides of the contract. I am comfortable challenging a solution, identifying the information required for a decision and coordinating the people responsible for delivering it.

Recent roles at Placemaking NSW and Savills formalised the next step: representing the client and owning the decisions from feasibility to handover.

Directed design across masterplan and building developments for government clients: built‑form massing and feasibility, design management, consultant coordination and client‑side advisory. Engagements include Blacktown Quarter, the Blacktown Arts and Cultural Centre and the Blacktown First Nations Cultural Hub.

What it took. On a significant community building delivered under the WSIG program, feasibility and preliminary costs had to reconcile with the agreed functional brief before design could safely proceed. I put the design team on hold while that reconciliation was done: counterintuitive against a tight programme, but it converted the risk of abortive design into cost and delivery certainty. When the teams resumed with budgets and the business case settled, the time bought went into resourcing and clarity, not redrawing.

Turning a waterfront design ambition into a buildable system.

Barangaroo Stage 1A established the foundational streets, plazas, laneways and waterfront language of a new city precinct. The 30‑metre‑wide promenade had to reconcile movement, hospitality, access, water management and complex marine structures as a repeatable, testable and durable public‑domain system.

01 / Situation

One surface, many competing demands.

The waterfront promenade required a concrete system capable of withstanding salt, sea spray, water penetration and intensive pedestrian and hospitality use. It also needed to meet slip and staining requirements, remain visually consistent across a large in‑situ installation, satisfy Lendlease and Barangaroo Delivery Authority expectations, connect materially to the adjoining architecture, and integrate stormwater and major structural interfaces below the public surface.

02 / Investigation

Testing became the route to agreement.

I led every material and concrete testing activity alongside the Lendlease project manager and the specialist teams providing technical inputs. More than one hundred working samples tested aggregate type, size, proportion and exposure depth; cement bases and colour systems; surface treatments, sealants, slip resistance, staining and water penetration. Roughly ninety samples were rejected on performance, consistency or maintainability; twelve survived to final assessment.

03 / Decision

In‑situ over precast: the call that shaped the promenade.

Precast panels were proposed for the waterfront promenade, following the precedent of Sydney's other significant harbour edges. I rejected them. In‑situ construction let each section be inspected and signed off before the next proceeded, kept final surface treatment under direct site control, and let the urban elements, the arbour along the retail edge, trees, furniture, lighting, services access and inspection pits, be coordinated within one set‑out rather than around factory pours. The call saved money and time and raised construction quality. It also demanded an operating plan: the promenade crossed a reconstructed caisson wall, basement structure, piled zones, natural ground and a cantilevered harbour‑edge system, each moving differently, so with the civil, structural and geotechnical engineers we developed a joint grid controlling pour size, span and sequencing. Controlling the spans meant sufficient lost formwork could be installed where the slab bridged structure that could not be stripped from below, holding quality and tolerance across the pour, while the same grid organised pedestrian walks, dining areas, DDA and BCA access and modelled pedestrian demand from the city, ferry and harbour arrivals.

04 / Procurement

Imported stone bought certainty and cost time.

Cost and availability ruled out the local stone the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and the City of Sydney had asked for in the lobbies and pedestrian walks. I took the sourcing overseas, then re‑sequenced the hard works around what could be procured. The decision delayed installation and forced revisions through drawings and specifications while other parts of the project kept moving, and that pressure had to be managed; in return it delivered the budget and the full stone procurement. The deviation was carried through the approval process, not around it.

05 / Delivery

Quality and water management were carried through construction.

Sample pours were monitored for movement and deflection using testing points and laser levels. Each production pour was inspected against the specification and coordinated with hoardings, building works and later stages. On‑site runoff from roofs and hard surfaces was collected and treated before reuse or harbour discharge, while external catchments were separately diverted and intercepted through the precinct stormwater system. I assessed the technical inputs, signed off the documentation and issued the approval letters that put each system into construction.

06 / Outcome

Consistency across the ground plane and built edge.

The material division sits at the stepped edge of the waterfront outdoor‑dining area, running the length of the promenade and continuing into the Anadara and Alexander waterfront buildings. The underlying mix was adjusted in aggregate size and treatment to suit architectural applications while maintaining a continuous precinct language.

Precinct consequence

More than half of Barangaroo South's 7.5‑hectare site is dedicated to public open space. Stage 1A connected three commercial tower interfaces, established twelve‑metre east–west pedestrian walks, and contributed to the continuous harbour route from Woolloomooloo to Blackwattle Bay. Today Barangaroo South supports more than 1,800 residents and 23,000 workers alongside 33,000 visitors each day.

01 / Condition

Each station was both infrastructure and city fabric.

The public ground plane had to support transport operations, development interfaces, pedestrian movement and the everyday life of its surrounding streets. Each site carried different stakeholders and technical constraints, yet all required a consistent standard of design coordination, review and decision‑making.

02 / Three stations

Three stations, three different problems.

Victoria Cross had to resolve two entries into North Sydney's street network, an open‑to‑sky laneway and the commercial development above. Martin Place had to work as an underground extension of the CBD: two entries, an all‑weather route, roughly 3,000 square metres of retail across three floors and a direct link to the existing T4 platforms. Waterloo had to give a transport arrival a civic address, a new plaza, crossings and retail edges connecting to a future mixed‑use precinct and an existing neighbourhood. Different clients' priorities, different councils, one required standard of design governance.

03 / The collision

Flood planning redrew the station entry.

At Victoria Cross, the route from the Miller Street laneway concourse down to Denison Street was planned as an external stair and lift. Probable maximum flood protection killed it: the 500‑millimetre defence above external levels could not be reconciled with open vertical transport. I moved the stair and the lift inside one of the buildings. The consequences ran through everything: floor area given up inside the development, pedestrian sight lines and circulation reworked, structural slabs redrawn, services and drainage recoordinated, and every level and grade reset. Flooding, not architecture, was driving the interface outcomes, and the job was to absorb that without losing the entry sequence.

04 / The packaging call

Opening day was a documentation decision.

As the stations came online, much of the surrounding access and building interface work was still under construction. I made the call on which areas had to be operational for opening day, then cut the documentation to match: separate delivery packages read under one master set of drawings, sequenced so surrounding buildings and tenants were protected and delay cost no more than it had to. The test applied to every package was Sydney Metro's own: the customer's experience of entering and leaving the station, safe, coherent and uncompromised by the works still running around it.

05 / Leadership

The work was managed as a portfolio, not a sequence.

I led four concurrent teams of eight to twelve specialists across the programme, setting priorities, allocating capability and connecting team planning, design reviews and government presentations. Client‑driven change was constant: wholesale drawing revisions, variation negotiation and re‑sequenced delivery, framed against programme and downstream consequence so the right issues reached clients, contractors and authorities at the right time.

Turning an adaptive‑reuse tower into a connected piece of city.

Quay Quarter Tower combined a steeply graded CBD site, retained structure, a public rooftop garden, retail podium and atrium into one coordinated delivery problem.

01 / Condition

A retained tower on a sharply changing ground plane.

The project reused much of the existing tower structure and core while adding a new steel structure and cantilevered form. At ground level, an eleven‑metre fall toward Circular Quay had to be reconciled with a three‑level retail base, atrium, public podium and rooftop terrace. The challenge was not only to connect old and new structure, but to make the tower work as a continuous part of the city.

02 / Leadership

Responsibility sat at the interfaces.

The interfaces were mine: where the retained structure met new steel, where the podium met the street, where retail met public circulation. I held them through documentation, procurement, construction and delivery, across consultant teams in Sydney and Copenhagen and a Tier 1 construction programme.

03 / Delivery system

A shared model made complex decisions visible.

I developed the detailed BIM model, recruited specialist technical staff and established a studio workflow capable of supporting Tier 1 documentation and delivery. The model became a coordination environment for Sydney and Copenhagen architects, specialist collaborators, consultants and the construction team, allowing level changes, thresholds, materials and buildability to be resolved before they became site problems.

04 / The threshold call

One floor, two constructions.

The precinct's ambition was a building that connected seamlessly into the CBD fabric around it, which meant the podium, atrium and external ground plane had to read as one material surface. Slab drainage and external exposure demanded different construction detailing on each side of the line, so we developed threshold details that protected the architectural intent while letting each condition perform. Unifying the sign‑off meant justifying a harder, more laborious construction methodology; managed across the hydraulic, architecture, landscape and services teams, the solution that looked more complicated and cost‑prohibitive on paper delivered the better outcome, more efficient maintenance across every system and a downstream reduction in cost. It took the management of the team to reach a position strong enough to win client sign‑off for installation.

05 / Outcome

The public ground plane became the connective work.

The tower was delivered in 2022 and the wider project was named World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival. For my practice, its lesson is that successful adaptive reuse depends on close management of interfaces: the retained building, new structure, public domain, retail, programme and construction sequence must be carried as one coordinated decision system.

Designing the first move in a precinct that did not yet exist.

EY Centre at 200 George Street was the first building delivered in the emerging Circular Quay precinct. The surrounding sites sat with other developers and builders, so its public edges had to work immediately and set a movement and public‑life pattern that later buildings, in other hands, would have to respond to.

01 / Situation

The first building had to anticipate the precinct to come.

200 George Street was delivered before the adjoining developments, and those sites were not ours: different developers, different builders, different programmes. Its ground plane therefore had to make a complete public place in its own right while protecting future pedestrian links, retail relationships and levels that would later connect to Salesforce Tower and One Circular Quay. Nothing about those connections could be assumed; they had to be built into the first piece and survive whoever came next.

02 / Responsibility

Public‑domain intent was carried into technical detail.

I managed the external and public‑domain work from initial concept into construction, including site links, retail interfaces, pedestrian connections, plazas, stairs and the café pavilion. The role combined architectural coordination with the detailed set‑out and material work needed to make each edge buildable.

03 / Resolution

The critical work sat between packages.

Piling, movement joints, waterproofing, levels, façades, tenancies and public‑domain finishes had to arrive at one coordinated outcome. I produced tender and construction documentation, reviewed shop drawings, issued site instructions and worked through consultant, stakeholder, tenant, budget and authority requirements as the building moved into delivery.

04 / Scope change

The stair earned a wider brief.

I produced the design for the external stair and the café pavilion, and the strength of that interface persuaded Mirvac to take it further: the vertical stair wall became a display for artefacts uncovered during excavation. That reopened a resolved package late. I re‑documented the stair and worked with the art consultant and heritage specialists to determine which objects, and which site stories, the wall would carry; the excavation had turned up not only the artefacts but the history they recorded. The display was then detailed with the arts curation specialists so the artefacts sit behind toughened, sealed glazing, readable from the public route and protected in an external environment. Scope growth this late usually costs a programme; this was coordinated, re‑documented and built.

05 / Carry forward

A project boundary is rarely the limit of responsibility.

That experience now informs how I approach client‑side design management: define future interfaces early, make responsibilities explicit and protect them through documentation and construction.

01 / Situation

A public building and a working market occupied the same edge.

The project had to welcome a forecast increase in visitation while protecting the logistics, loading, servicing and food‑market operations that make the place function. At the same time, a building over a marine environment had to connect Wentworth Park and Bridge Road to a new public foreshore.

02 / Responsibility

The landscape scope was also an infrastructure scope.

I worked across landscape and architecture from concept through State Significant Development and documentation. This included four connected public spaces: the urban park and harbourside entry, an extension of the Glebe foreshore, a lowered harbour‑edge promenade and a greener Bridge Road boulevard.

03 / Management

Public life, ecology and operations were coordinated together.

I coordinated Infrastructure NSW, Multiplex, Government Architect NSW design reviews and the structural, marine, environmental and operational specialists, and the hardest line to hold was between operations and public life. The market's operators needed more storage, heavy‑vehicle hardstand and temporary refrigerated storage for the Easter and Christmas peaks; the government's brief was an open, accessible public environment. It took repeated design and operational planning sessions, drawings and contractual discussion to resolve, and both sides conceded usable area. The scheme that closed it lets peak flows run through areas that can be temporarily secured to meet the operators' contractual requirements, then return to the public.

04 / Outcome

The project became both destination and connector.

The market opened in January 2026 with 6,000 square metres of new public open space. My involvement concluded in 2021, before final completion; the project appears here as evidence of leading the design and approval phases that set the public‑domain, movement and coordination framework for later delivery.
